The Clarisonic Mia
My relationship with the Clarisonic Mia did not begin as love at first use. Rather, ours was a gradually-developed fondness. It has recently become one of my favorite devices, however, for I learned how to properly use it. Until last fall, I worked as a regional makeup artist and promoter for a well-known cosmetic company. Because I was constantly in and out of cosmetic doors all along the southeastern United States, I often learned of products and tips well before the majority of the population.
A representative for Clarisonic and I often interacted at events, and she once gifted me with a variety of brush heads to experiment with. A couple of years ago, she had handwritten a few pointers and tips for maximizing benefits from use of the Clarisonic, and had given it to me to refer to. I thanked her, folded it and placed it in one of my brush bags. I had forgotten about it until last month when, behold, I found it while in the midst of mid-summer cleaning. I learned that my sporadic use of it had been sloppy, rushed and, therefore, likely counterproductive.
Prior to learning how to properly use this device, I noticed occasional benefits from my use of it, but none which were remotely game-changing. I actually thought the device was decent, but mostly overpriced and overhyped. I have since changed my stance, however. After having not used it for nearly two months, I pulled it from hibernation and used it according to her instructions. I noticed an immediate difference. Since faithfully using it properly for the past month, I have had no breakouts of any kind. Even the tiny bumps which often insist upon lurking just under the surface of my jaw and chin area have disappeared entirely. Additionally, I have experienced a reduction in pore size as well.
The Clarisonic brush simply allows for one to achieve a deeper clean. It pulls all of the “gunk” lodged in your pores, which causes them to dilate. When the “gunk” is removed, the pores are then allowed to shrink. Most importantly, clean pores allow your serums, acids and moisturizers to absorb optimally.
How Do I Use It?
- Use gentle pressure. Allow the brush to do its job; it needs only a gentle amount of assistance from you.
- Use slow, circular strokes moving upward. Do not rush the process.
- Make sure that both your brush and face are wet prior to use. Apply a full dime-sized amount of cleanser to the brush. The brush utilizes the lather from your cleanser.
- Do not overuse, for it may cause drier skin types to be further dehydrated. Be mindful of your skin type, and experiment with how often you use it. Some may achieve the best result with use twice per day, while others may need to use it only once every few days.
- The choice of cleanser matters, for it must be a marriage of harmony to avoid being counterproductive.
- Clean your brush head regularly with soap and water.
How Do I Know Which Brush Head To Choose?
Sensitive – From what I have been told as well as read while conducting my own research, the majority of people will fall into this category. If your skin is normal/combination to slightly dry and if you have only moderate breakouts, this is likely your best option. I have experimented with various brush heads, but always return to this. My skin is oily and not particularly sensitive, yet this brush head seems to work best for my skin.
Normal – If your skin has no major concerns, you may want to try this brush head. The representative I spoke with emphasized that the normal brush head is more intense than most people realize, however. She always suggests starting with the sensitive head if one has any doubt in regards to their skin type.
Deep Pore – This is suitable for those with excessively oily skin, blackheads and chronically-clogged pores.
Delicate – If you have easily-irritated skin or issues such as rosacea, absolutely begin experimenting with this brush head.
Acne – This category may seem self-explanatory, however this brush head is more sensitive than one would assume. Its texture is quite velvety, and therefore does not offer an intense clean the same way the deep pore brush head provides. It is for those with problematic, inflamed and overall unhappy skin. It is incredibly gentle, as not to further irritate breakouts.
Luxe – This brush head feels as smooth as silk, and was designed for dry and mature skin types. I used it once for mere experimentation, and felt as though it did not clean my oily skin at all. I only recommend it for those with severely dry and aged skin in dire need of moisture and care.
Note: I have only used the Clarisonic Mia, therefore can only discuss my experience with it. However, there are other Clarisonic options available which offer further control in terms of settings, speed, etc.

Essential Skin Solutions Face And Body Brush Microdermabrasion System
This affordable device is worth every penny, and has far exceeded my expectations. In fact, it would be worth purchasing even if it were sold at three times its current price. As many of my faithful readers and subscribers are already aware, I am a passionate fan of microdermabrasion as a method for skin exfoliation and texture refinement. This device contains all the tools one needs for facial, body and heel exfoliation. It is ideal for use prior to self-tanner application, an at-home pedicure or simply face and body skincare maintenance. It is gentle, effective and the results are cumulative.
If used correctly, it is impossible not to notice immediate benefits in regards to skin texture and tone. It provokes dead skin to shrivel and die into oblivion, revealing much smoother and glowing skin.
Alternate use of this system with Gratiae Organics Exfoliating Body Scrub, and create the softest skin of your life. The combination is simply magic.
