As I am writing the final pages of chapter 2016, I find myself reflecting on some of its highlights. Early in the summer, I wrote a piece for Redbook.com about how practicing gratitude has become my ultimate source of sun. I’m sharing it with you here but it has proven to be magic.
Gratitude is an often-preached principle which is equally as undervalued.
In shadowed moments of anger, despair or frustration, I have learned to pose the following question to myself: “Who is deserving of my thankfulness today?” I then take pen to paper and write until my fingers ache – as though I’m an overflowing fountain of “thank you, thank you, thank you.” I write and write until the callus on my middle-finger reemerges and my dear friend gratitude – in its most delicate and fun-loving fashion – asks to burn away all of the hurt.
And, you know what? It works.
With every spark of remembrance, I gradually feel myself uncurling – inch-by-inch and stretch-by-stretch – from my dark and dusty corner of despair. The light finds my face again. Before long, I am glowing – rising strong to stand on my feet.
So, I hope you will join me in always leaving your door ajar for gratitude . Anytime your walls have fallen dark, a simple pull or tug will allow it to illuminate your space and swallow all that looms over your reasons for happiness.
And, here is the best part: When gratitude is invited in, she brings with her an entourage of splendid friends – inspiration, laughter, luck, opportunity and pleasure, just to name a few. By default, your pity party is overruled by full-on celebration and joy.
