Have You Ever Felt as Though You Need to Hit a Reset Button, Emotionally, Mentally or Physically?
Perhaps you have been through a breakup, a divorce, a job loss, a health scare, struggles with your weight or have just been partying and abusing your body too much. This article will focus on products and recommendations to help you not only feel better about yourself, but actually improve your well-being. It is about wiping the slate clean and helping your body recover from any abuse it may have endured, which brought you to the desire for a reboot.
When you nurture the part of you which is not external (which is not actually a part of you, but who you really are), your life becomes an overall more beautiful experience. Who says you have to wait until the year is new to embark on self-improvement? There is no magic in the year being new, and any day is the perfect day to better appearance, your health, your mindset and the world around you. Any day is the perfect day to change your eating habits, thought habits and lifestyle.
Below are simply a few suggestions to get you moving on a path of self-improvement. I look forward to creating many more articles and discussions on this subject.
You are How You Move
Your body is designed to move. You were not created to sit on your butt and play Candy Crush all day. The human body was made to run, jump, climb and crawl. Finding a method of motion which feels good to your body is therapeutic. I realize many of you may be runners and, if so, I commend you. I just don’t like it. I prefer workouts which challenge my strength and coordination, while calming and centering my mind.
Are You Out of Whack? Fix Your Alignment!
I would like to challenge you to notice some things about your body that you may not have noticed before. Many people, even teenagers, are in pain or are unable to reach their maximum health and fitness potential because of poor alignment and posture. It may be caused by sitting for too many hours a day, or it may stem from a sports injury.
Look in the mirror. Are your shoulders level? Are your hips level? Is one of them rotated forward? Are your knees positioned evenly, or does one of them invert more than the other? Are the curves of your waist even? Most importantly, are you experiencing chronic pain in certain areas of your body? Postural alignment is more important than you may think. You do not, and should not, go through life experiencing pain when you wake each morning. You should not deny yourself the ability to play a sport or engage in an activity you love because of pain. We often blame the activity as “bad for us”, but the truth is our posture and dysfunctional movement patterns are likely to blame.
I suffered with chronic right hip flexor and low back pain for four years, as a result of a dance injury. It remains an area I continue to nurture regularly, but I credit a combination of a few exercises and stretches from the books below, along with good chiropractic care, to how great I now feel. My range of motion has improved considerably, and my pain has reduced dramatically. I am able to breathe better, for the muscles around my diaphragm are no longer tense and restricted. I am able to do yoga poses I was unable to do six months ago.
Additionally, I have learned posture affects your lung health, digestive health, body fat distribution and even your ability to carry a pregnancy. If your pelvis is not in proper position, it could prevent you from conceiving and/or carrying a pregnancy full term. I recommend starting with the following books, which will help you gain a much better understanding of your body and its ability to heal and renew itself. The first book was written by Pete Egoscue, who I greatly respect. He is the founder of The Egoscue Method. Although the method has helped a great deal of people, it is quite expensive and a considerable financial risk to take. If you feel your body is out of alignment, I recommend reading the book and trying the exercises first:
I credit the brilliant Jonathan FitzGordon, a yoga instructor and creator of the Core Walking Program, to helping me identify exactly what was ailing me when no one else did. I learned more from spending less than $10 on the following book than I did spending over $1,000 on physical therapy, which never truly helped.
The Tracy Anderson Method’s Perfect Design Series
I have tried several of Tracy Anderson’s workouts, but this 3-DVD collection is by far my favorite. I have done all of the workouts a handful of times before (especially the first two). Tracy Anderson is well-known as being a celebrity fitness trainer, and has been criticized many times for being vocal about her fondness for creating “teeny tiny” dancer-esque bodies. I have no idea why people are offended by her being vocal about such a goal. Let’s get real and cut Tracy some slack, ladies! Almost every woman I know is vocal about how she would like to be smaller. In fact, I am quite positive I can recall every girlfriend I have ever had expressing her desire to make at least some part of her body smaller.
I do not feel Tracy is criticizing women for not being naturally tiny, but is expressing that she would like to make their bodies overall smaller and more feminine, as opposed to adding further bulk with exercises. From my observation, she truly seems passionate and sincere about her knowledge and, therefore, ability to alter a woman’s body for the better. It depends upon your personal goals and also what type of look you are after, but personally I am not particularly a fan of lifting heavy weights. Rather, I like to use my own body as a form of resistance. This DVD set contains three workouts ranging from beginner to advanced. It has an intimate, calming, almost yoga-esque feel to it, yet I finish dripping in sweat every time. It requires the mind to be engaged, as some of the moves require specific attention to detail. It truly is therapeutic, and the cumulative results are beyond impressive.
The first time I completed one of Tracy’s workouts, I was sore in places I had never been sore before. I personally crave the feeling of soreness after a workout. My favorite benefit of Tracy’s Anderson’s workouts are the immediate “corset” type of effect they offer. When I am consistent with Tracy’s workouts, my body looks its absolute most feminine, toned and proportioned. The reason I prefer this set specifically to some of her other workouts is because she incorporates a considerable amount stretching into it. She doesn’t always do this, and I know for my body, stretching feels good. You will not need any weights at all for this workout. The only equipment required is a yoga mat and a standard dining room chair.
You Are What You Consume
Eat Your Produce (And Eat it In Season!) Several items are always on my shopping list: 1) At least two green vegetables, whatever is in season, (kale, spinach, dandelion greens, chard, etc.), 2) A root vegetable (beets are my favorite in the summer and fall) and, 3) A variety of fruits. Your body is designed to crave and eat with the season. Also, foods currently in season are much fresher, and therefore more nutrient-dense. Finally, it is less expensive to eat with the season! Below is an excellent chart I found online, which I refer to regularly (source: sonnithehungryyogi.com):
Have Some Tea
Yogi Daily Detox Tea is one of my staples because it is gentle enough to be consumed multiple times a day, yet improves the function of your liver and kidneys (your body’s detoxifiers). I am certain it improves my kidney function because my face appears less puffy and I have less water retention when I drink a cup regularly.
Stinging Nettle Tea is another excellent choice. It provides strength and support for your kidneys and adrenals. It is a natural diuretic and helps to flush uric acid from aching muscles and joints (I can attest to this benefit, as I was aching badly from one stressful and sleepless night last year). However, most significantly, and I cannot be sure exactly why, it makes a pronounced difference in my skin! It does INCREDIBLE things for my skin by providing it with a glow and radiance like nothing else I have tried. Lastly, if you have issues with allergies, I suggest you conduct some research on stinging nettles. Many report a reduction in allergic reactions.
Clean Up Your Gut
Skin issues, as well as issues around the eyes, are indicators of poor digestion and/or an unhappy liver.
I realize many medical professionals consider oxygen therapies to be either controversial or ineffective, and if so, I disagree. Oxygen therapy has been an incredibly effective detoxifying tool for my body, and I discuss it in depth in another article. Homozon is essentially ozone in a powder form, and it is incredibly useful in purging gunk from your digestive tract. If used properly, you will be amazed at what it will purge from your system. It has done wonders for my digestive system, while allowing me to feel lighter and cleaner. You can purchase homozon here.
Milk Thistle for Liver Heath
If your liver is tired and overworked, you must offer it some support. Improving your diet, performing a liver flush and reducing your alcohol consumption are the first steps, however milk thistle is fantastic for assisting the process. Each and every time I plan to consume any alcohol, I first take milk thistle. It is exceptional for liver support, and I notice a pronounced difference. For example, a couple of glasses of wine or liquor drinks once disturbed my sleep. However, now that I faithfully take milk thistle prior to drinking any alcohol, I sleep like a baby.
Probiotics for Digestive Health
Healthy intestinal flora is essential for proper digestion and immunity. Inner Eco Probiotics are the best (for my body) I have ever tried. When I am faithful about consuming this product daily, my dark circles and under eye puffiness diminish almost entirely. Any indigestion issues also clear up completely. I feel less bloated, less sluggish and overall cleaner and more free.
Find a Ritual You Love
I’ve loved taking baths since I was a little girl. One of my favorite nighttime rituals is to fill a bath, light a couple of my favorite scented candles and burn incense. I somewhat meditate in the bath, and it is the best time with just myself. I escape from the outside world during that time, and so it helps me to get centered, relaxed and then recharged. So, try it. Don’t take your phone with you! Try abandoning Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat for twenty minutes and spend time with nothing but yourself. Taking baths may not be for you and, if so, find something that is. Just spend some time with yourself, free of all distractions.
Cleanse Your Mind & Shift Your Mindset:
Celebrate Yourself versus Being Driven By Negative Thoughts About Yourself.
Try this: STOP BEING MEAN TO YOURSELF! Just stop it. It gets you nowhere you will ever want to be. You don’t appreciate it when others say negative things about you, so why say negative things about yourself to yourself? So, STOP. Say something nice about yourself to yourself every morning, and mean it. Stand in front of a mirror, look yourself in the eyes and say it. The key is: you must really mean it. It may feel silly at first. It may even feel like a lie at first, but you deserve the reminder. It has nothing to do with arrogance and everything to do with grounding yourself in a place of acceptance. The sooner you accept yourself, the sooner you will be able to give yourself the life reboot you deserve.
