This article is the second edition of my three-part series on the discussion of helping you find a cause and cure for your acne issues. If you suffer from acne, please know it is not some random event with which you are unfortunately plagued. It is no senseless mystery, nor is it “just one of those things” with which you have been cursed. Just because your mother suffered from acne does not mean you have to. There is a root cause for your problem. The root may be very simple, or it may be several factors working against you. Regardless, there is always a solution.
In Edition I , I provided a general overview of effective products and tips, as well as a discussion of common bad habits which contribute to breakouts. In this edition, I will discuss nutritional deficiencies as well as digestive health, which are often two main factors which must be addressed when curing acne.
I am sure there are other approaches and courses of treatment which work very well for clearing acne. I am simply sharing the ones which have worked for me and others I have personally observed improving their skin. I have witnessed countless people clear years of acne issues without the help of medical intervention. It is not only possible, but probable. Your job is to simply find the right solution for you, and then give your skin (and body!) daily attention and care.
Clean Up Your Gut!
If your digestive system isn’t functioning properly and is therefore unable to expel waste efficiently, it will resort to other organs. Well, your skin is your largest organ! The first step toward getting a grip on acne problems is to clean up your gut.
My preferred colon cleanse is a product by the name of Homozon. It is an ozonated magnesium oxide powder, and will expel ungodly amounts of impacted gunk from your colon. Be prepared to make frequent trips to the restroom in the initial weeks of consuming the powder. Because it tastes horribly, I opt to put the powder into capsules and drink them down with a glass of lemon water. The lemon water is an important component in the success of this product, for the citric acid releases the ozone gas into your body. The ozone gas is what makes this product effective. Homozon will flood your small and large intestines with oxygen, expelling all pathogens and impacted fecal matter as well as destroying diseases of every kind. Where there are high oxygen levels, disease cannot exist. Expect an improvement in not only your skin, but also your overall health.
Frequently asked questions about Homozon here.
Do you ever experience discomfort after a meal? If so, perhaps your body is not breaking your food down properly. Perhaps it is rather tired of processing genetically modified organisms and hydrogenated oils. If you are going to eat a banana, or any actual food for that matter, it is not necessary to take a digestive enzyme to support your system. Your body knows what to do with that, unless of course you have an allergy to that particular food. However, if you are going to eat birthday cake, your body will almost certainly need some assistance. Your body views processed foods as an interference.
I never consume animal flesh or processed foods of any kind without first taking a digestive enzyme. I prefer Garden of Life’s RAW Enzymes for Women, however there is also an excellent formula available for men. When I am out at dinner with friends, people often make odd glances at my attempt to discreetly swallow this little capsule. It doesn’t bother me, however, because they are often the ones complaining of bloating, gas and acid reflux. The better I eat and the better I take care of my digestive system, the better clarity my skin has.
Probiotics are life-giving. Your immune system relies on balanced intestinal flora. I believe coconut water kefir is one of the most optimal sources of healthy bacteria. I have raved about this product multiple times already, and I will likely never shut up about it. It is truly that incredible. Along with digestive enzymes, this product has completely transformed my digestive system as well as my skin. It has also done incredible things for my immune system. When I am consistent with it, I notice my under-eye dark circles diminish and my eyes appear brighter. This is no exaggeration. Vanity is partly what drives me to continue to consume this product.
Your digestive system affects your appearance in a multitude of ways, with skin clarity being only one of them. I cannot stress enough the importance of improving your digestion and ridding your colon of old impacted gunk which has likely been there for months or even years. It will inevitably show on your face as well as your entire body.
I purchase from Whole Foods Market.
Note: Your dermatologist may have prescribed you antibiotics for your acne. While this may initially destroy the bacteria which is contributing to your breakouts, two other things will almost certainly occur:
1) Your body will eventually become resistant to the antibiotics, and
2)The antibiotics will create an entirely new set of problems within your body, for they will destroy the healthy bacteria which are essential to your immunity and digestion.
Zinc is one of the many crucial minerals your body needs. Acne is only one of many symptoms caused by a zinc deficiency. Excessive hair shedding, slowed healing of wounds, low libido (oh hell no!), dandruff and impaired immunity are among the others. Optimal zinc levels also play a key role in the prevention of stretch marks and scarring.
Just because you have acne does not mean you can be sure you are deficient in zinc. Your issue may very well be a hormonal imbalance, an upset digestive system or an overall highly toxic body. Still, an immense amount of research suggests that the formation of acne is often related to a zinc deficiency. Monitoring your zinc intake is certainly a great place to start. There is no need to go to extremes, however.
I recommend first incorporating more zinc-rich foods into your diet as well as taking a high-quality zinc supplement from a natural source, but in a modest dosage. If you begin to see benefits, you can then experiment with dosages and determine if you need more or less. Always listen to your body.
Balance Your B’s
Beware of Biotin in Excess
Although I have never suffered from severe acne breakouts, I have gone through a couple of brief periods of them being quite moderate. My face was so broken out once that going out in public without foundation was not something I would have dared to do. My skin remained in that awful state for almost two solid months, until I determined the culprit. I had been taking high amounts of biotin in an effort to increase the growth rate of my hair. While my hair began growing at an impressive rate, my jawline became home to these horribly painful, swollen and inflamed cystic pimples. Within weeks of discontinuing the biotin, the cysts were gone and my face was almost completely clear.
Biotin isn’t a bad guy, however. It is responsible for maintaining healthy hair and nails, and also assists somewhat in the function of your metabolism. It just isn’t a great idea to take it in excess. You need a balance of the b vitamins, for all of them are important to your health. For example, vitamin b6 is helpful for your adrenal glands and nervous system. Vitamin b12 assists in the maintenance of your red blood cells.
If you are taking biotin for hair growth, just please be aware that it may be contributing to your acne issues. It may be a better idea to take a whole food-based vitamin b complex which contains an adequate amount of biotin.
Your Body is Not A Trash Dump!
I see you over there chomping on those cheese puffs and licking that ice cream bowl while wondering why you can’t rid your face of acne! Eating inflammatory, processed foods and taking antibiotics is not the proper protocol. I challenge you to actually consider each bite of food, sip of drink, powder and pill you ingest and swallow. Your body is a wondrous miracle and is designed to maintain perfect health, however, it reacts negatively when presented with constant interferences. Just as you get mad when people cause disruptions on your plans or your groove, your body gets mad also. It has the right to defend itself, and you should be thankful it does!
Before you eat it, think about it. Before you fill that prescription, think about it. You may not subscribe to all of the information I am giving you, and that is okay! I challenge you to do your own research. In fact, it would make me incredibly proud if any of my articles compelled you to become more of a researcher and more hungry for knowledge. I do not claim to have all of the answers. This site was created to inform you, but most importantly promote a culture of you informing yourself.
Shift Your Mindset
I challenge you to shift your thinking. Instead of hating your skin, try thanking your body for creating the condition in an effort to protect itself. Instead of asking what is wrong with your skin or your body, take a moment to appreciate how hard your body works for you every day. Take a moment to thank your skin for protecting your organs. Instead of thinking you are doomed with acne forever, start envisioning yourself with clear skin and begin to consider how much you are going to enjoy it. Before you can change anything, you must first change your mindset. Everything begins in the mind.
