Before you proceed, please be sure that you have read part I of this series. In it, I interview Celebrity Body Guru Ashley Black and explain how fascia affects not only your beauty and fitness goals, but ultimately your quality of life.
There I was – bare-skinned, shivering and sprawled across a therapy table in Ashley Black’s Beverly Hills hotel suite, at the total mercy of her and her team. We had just completed our three hour-long magazine interview, but Black was adamant about gifting me with her hands-on, total body assessment. “I want you to have the full experience,” she said, with an auspicious wink.
At once, I was surrounded. There were three pairs of hands simultaneously kneading, pulling, scrubbing, yanking and fasciablasting my most tightly-knotted and pain-stricken crevices – several of which a six year-old dance injury had nested comfortably into. And, clearly, these areas were not happy about being disrupted.
“Both of your hips are jammed, but the right one is extremely so. I’m about to pull it out,” Black informed me, coolly, as though she were generating a simple grocery list.
At this point, I was practically yodeling obscenities. And, then… pop!
My hip surrendered to her merciless tugging. It was a sensation I had never experienced prior – not even in all of my years of experimenting with acupuncture, foam rolling, myofascial release, pilates, hot yoga and adjustments from the most confident chiropractors known to man. Even a Chinese massage therapist in Hong Kong who crawled onto my back and positioned herself atop my quadratus lumborum – chanting and beating my flesh like a drum – did not serve to provide the seemingly effortless release that Black gave me.
“I feel like a butterfly whose wing has long been crammed inside of its cocoon, but has finally been set free,” I told Black, with a wide-eyed blend of astonishment, fascination, spook and relief. I wondered, Is this therapy or is this wizardry?
This newfound liberation was thrilling, for the nagging ache in my right hip and glute had become a most daunting part of me. But, I stood in absolute awe that what my years of mind-bending research and treating my body as its own science experiment had convinced me of was now resonating as unequivocal truth: There is no such thing as incurable.
Pain is not a prison sentence our bodies give us. Rather, it is a brilliant communication system. If we muffle its voice and live with it long enough, its nagging whisper will become louder, angrily blasting like an intercom system across our nerves, muscles, organs and veins. In the six years since my injury, I had been told, by a string of various bodywork experts, “You’re young and healthy. Just be thankful for that. These areas of discomfort may be something you have to live with and manage with occasional flare-ups.”
No. I was unwilling to accept that as my fate. I was answering my body’s call and, thus, seeking the totality of a cure. I believed my body deserved absolute liberation and restoration. And, reader, I declare that whatever ails you – whether big or small, whispering or angrily blasting over your body like an intercom – deserves absolute liberation and restoration, too.
Black chimes in: “Every single person who comes to me feeling hopeless has been told it is something else when it is, in fact, fascia. I’ve never seen it any other way. Because fascia is everywhere, there is always a fascial component to every bodily problem.”
Allow those words to echo and resound throughout your every doubt.
So What Does Fascia Freedom Look Like?
To begin, please know you are not perpetually trapped in any sickly shell or postpartum body you no longer recognize. Your identity is not wrapped up in any label your doctor has given you. You are not doomed to exist with those tight, unrelenting areas of restriction and pain, those lumpy pockets of problem areas, those leg veins which beckon to be covered by sweat paints, or the cellulite dimples which make you hide under your beach towel.
My friend, you are not helpless at all. You are extraordinarily dynamic, and you are meant to live confidently and luminously.
You may have arrived here, driven by the dream of being cellulite-free. But understand that this is so much more than a vanity-related endeavor. This is empowerment; taking your body back into your own mighty hands.
Black offers her perspective: “People approach me and say, ‘Can you believe you invented the cure for cellulite?’ And, yes I did, which is pretty cool. But that is only the tip of the iceberg with this movement. Restructuring and restoring fascia is life-changing in every way possible – from mental health to total body function – which means it goes far beyond cellulite.”
Since I embarked on my aggressive research of Fasciology™ a year ago, I have witnessed some extraordinary unfoldings:

Rule #1 Get Hot, Sweaty and Oily
Heated fascia is more receptive to manipulation, and the lubrication of the skin enables the FasciaBlaster® to work more deeply at breaking up adhesions. You will never see trailblazing changes until you begin incorporating the mighty engine of heat into your blasting sessions.
Black explains: “Just as water is always H20 but can be a frozen block that would kill you if you dropped it on your head or it can also be steam, fascia is somewhat like that. Although the states are not as great of a variance as water, it can change from mushy, gooey to that of a stiff piece of fabric. Heat is the only difference, and it garners rapid changes.”

Rule #2 Don’t Overcomplicate; It’s Just Total Body Scrubbing!
Black suggests hovering over a pain threshold of about a level seven. Begin with addressing your problem areas, but do not neglect the rest of your body. Fascia is an interconnected and interwoven system. For example, recoiled fascia in your ribcage may be acting as a gatekeeper; preventing the fascia in your groin from crossing over into freedom.
Rule #3 Daily Hydration Is Non-negotiable.
Black is a self-proclaimed “stickler’ about this matter, saying, “Fascia is a system, just like blood, skin and organs. It requires maintenance. You wouldn’t drink a glass a water and hope that it lasts you for weeks, would you? Fascia is extremely vital to your state of health, and requires regular attention and care.”
But, be aware that water alone is not sufficient. Supplementing with electrolytes is equally as important. “The body’s ability to send a signal to move requires electrolytes at a cellular level. If your body has plenty of water but insufficient electrolytes, the signal will not cross,” says Black.
Rule #4 Feed Your Fascia the Way You Would Feed a Child You Love
“Our bodies are made up of cells. And, what is good for your blood cells, kidney cells and skin cells is also good for your fascia cells. In my two decades as a practitioner, I have learned that it takes me three times longer to get a result with someone who eats a poor diet than it does with someone who eats nutrient-dense food,” says Black.
Rule #5 Be Not Spooked By the Bruise!
Healthy tissue does not bruise. Therefore, if you bruise from blasting, you have broken apart an adhesion. When an adhesion is broken apart, the body cheers and promptly flushes blood to the area. The blood flushing reveals itself as a bruise.
Black adds, “Once an area has bruised, you must let it heal for a few days before again blasting over it.”
**Tip: Arnica is widely recommended to minimize bruising, but it never made a difference for me. However, treating my bruises with a cotton pad saturated with Apple Cider Vinegar fades them entirely within 48 hours.
Rule #6 Expect the Unpleasantries of Detox (but Don’t Freak Out When it Happens!)
Detoxification can be overwhelming. It can feel as though you’ve opened Pandora’s Box, in fact, for traumatic memories and toxins from medications – among other things – are stored in the fascia cells.
Black offers both warning and comfort in this realm: “When the fascia is badly restricted and tangled, there will be trapped toxins which would normally move out through the body’s natural waste system. When you begin using the FasciaBlaster®, it is like untangling a massive hair knot. You untangle the fascia but you will also untangle everything else which happens to be trapped in that web of destruction.”
The most common fasciablasting detox symptoms are as follows:
- Skin Rash
- Brain Fog
- Increase in Dream Frequency & Intensity

Tips for Surviving Detox Are as Follows:
- Increase your water intake to encourage the flushing of toxins.
- Take a binding agent daily (I swear by activated charcoal for supporting this process).
- Remain calm, be aware of what is occurring and be grateful to your body’s ability to heal itself.
Rule #7 Do Not Compare Your Progress With Your Counterpart’s
Some blasters garner results after the first session, whereas some require months of consistent sessions to manifest a jaw-dropping before-and-after. Determine which kind of fascial distortion you have, for this will help you gauge your progress (or lack thereof).
Above all, remember: Relax. Results will come.
Rule #8 Set Your Standards High For Your Health
For this one, I am passing the mic back to Black : “Cellulite and severe problem areas are devastating to women. The fact that there are women who wear black sweatpants in the middle of summer and are willing to sweat because they are so embarrassed; how can you take that away from someone’s mental well-being? No one should have to accept that.
And, I do not support this new movement of ’embracing your body the way it is.’ We should not have a blanket acceptance of how things are, especially when in a spirit of being unhealthy. Embracing and flaunting our poor health is like saying, ‘Oh, I love my Ferrari, but I’m going to store dog shit in it and let birds poop on it.’ No; we have all been given the gift of a Ferrari, and we should take utmost care of it. My stance is to accept what you are while becoming the best version of yourself.”
Rule #9 Blast Only With Absolute Love
Above all, this is what I most hope you will draw from this article. Because, truly, blasting has become one of my most beloved self-care rituals.
Therefore, you are forbidden to permit frustration, hastiness or punishing and self-loathing thoughts into your blasting quarters. Every stroke is an incantation – a spell for transformation. This is an act of love, care, celebration and restoration.
