I have no desire to venture through another day – sunny or overcast, breathing easy or sneezy – without the use of essential oils to carry me through every lovely or unfortunate moment. They simply make everything better. Therefore, I have created a three-part series to explain my devotion and appreciation for them, along with a plethora of information to hopefully answer your most skeptical questions. In this first edition, I offer you a simple overview of the essential oil basics.
These oils are not a fad, a hoax, a gimmick, a momentary craze, nor are they fairy dust. What they represent, for me, can be encapsulated into one word: transformative.
Essential oils are like the friend who injects you with restorative hope when you’ve reached the depth of your funk, or simply greets you with a high-five and a hug when you’re being a perpetual grump. They are the skip in your step, the sun appearing through your storm cloud and the shower that never runs out of hot water.
My house smells like gingerbread by day, and a relaxing oasis by night. And, in the hours in between, I feel as fresh as a daisy – with more energy and vigor than ever before. I will never go back. My devotion to essential oils has crossed over into the realm of irreversible.
So, if you suffer from an ailment, big or small, mildly annoying or debilitating, ranging from cracked cuticles to cellulite, an angry digestive system to a broken heart, it would be wise to continue reading and pay attention. I have folded myself into the learning process to a near obsessive degree, and have been experimenting, interviewing, testing and tenaciously researching. And, I will continue to do so.
The Essential Oil Basics
This edition is the first of a three-part series, thus is merely an introduction. I have a wealth of information to offer over the course of the series, so please make sure you check back each week to finish reading all three editions.
What are Essential Oils, Anyway?
Essential oils are the highly concentrated, organic components obtained from the plant of their kind. They are extracted by a process of distilling the plant’s seeds, roots, bark, stems, leaves, fruit, flowers, resin or wood. They bring the goods, baby.
How Are They Superior to My Other Supplements?
Essential oils have played a significant role in a broad range of beauty and wellness practices for five thousand years or more. They aren’t pitching you any dream they cannot fulfill. They are an ancient healer of the body, mind and spirit; having improved lives across countless civilizations, cultures and generations.
They Pose No Interference to the Body’s Natural Balance – Many supplements disrupt the biochemistry of the body and accumulate in the system over time, however essential oils pose no threat in such regard (when used properly). Rather, whatever is not needed once healing and nourishment has reached completion is then passed through with ease.
Their Molecular Structure Is Small and actually mimics the molecules of the human body, enabling the oils to penetrate cell membranes and diffuse throughout the tissues and bloodstream. They act quickly, and your body is spared the exhaustive work of digesting and processing, which is required when ingesting traditional supplements. In fact, within a half hour of applying a couple of drops of essential oil to the bottoms of your feet, the oils have reached every cell in your entire body.
They Are Life-Giving – Essential oils are highly supportive of life. Anytime you breathe them, ingest them or apply them externally, you are increasing the oxygen levels of your blood and lymphatic system. Oxygen is essential for the transportation of nutrients to cells as well as the mobilization of toxins from the cells and is, therefore, vital to life.
They Help to Heal Stored Emotions & Release Repressed Memories – The smell receptors in your nose communicates directly with your brain’s limbic system. This area of the brain stores all of your emotional experiences and memories, which greatly influences your daily decisions, thought processes and, thus, your life. When one breathes in essential oils, such area of the brain is immediately stimulated, thereby helping to heal emotional and mental wounds. I dive much deeper into this in Edition III of this series.
Aren’t Essential Oil Brands Pretty Much All the Same, Though?
Nope. I wish.
I’d love to have the convenience and freedom to make a quick trip to my local health food store or market and know with certainty that I’m purchasing a therapeutic-grade oil. This isn’t the case, though. I’ve researched this topic extensively, which is why I will only purchase my essential oils from a single source. You may assume they are all created equally, as I once did, but before you disregard my decision, I challenge you to do your own research.
In the United States, there are no regulations or standards for the production of essential oils. This means, when purchasing an oil from your health food store or local market, you may potentially be purchasing an oil which has been highly diluted with carrier oils (coconut, jojoba, olive, etc) and/or synthetic chemicals, will only be able to obtain either a fraction of the benefits or none at all.
You wouldn’t blindly invest in a relationship with just any well-packaged person, would you? You’d at least want to check out their history and learn about where they came from before investing in the relationship, right?
Through my research, I have only been able to determine a moderate number of companies I believe are producing oils of high quality. However, it is difficult to be sure, for there are also an abundance of companies producing worthless junk. Please believe that the source matters. Do not sell yourself short of the immense benefits which come from the use of a pure, therapeutic-grade essential oil. Half-ass is not “good enough” for me, and it should not be “good enough” for you.
Transparency is invaluable, which is why I chose Young Living as my source. They are the only brand of essential oils I feel comfortable ingesting. Their process is consistent, rigorous and transparent in every aspect.
Why Are Essential Oils so Expensive? It Seems Like a Rip-0ff…
That’s what I initially thought, too.
Approximately 50 to 60 roses are needed to make a single drop of Young Living rose oil. A drop of lemon oil is made by cold-pressing the lemon rinds, and calls for about a pound of lemons. The entire process is also incredibly tedious and time-consuming.
Once you learn how valuable these oils can be for your bodily health, mental health, personal relationship health and, yes, even your appearance, you will never doubt it being worth the investment. Essential oils are capable of assisting you in your most far-fetched vanity- and wellness-related dreams.
