Welcome to Edition III of my three-part Essential Oil Series. You may be wondering what essential oils have to do with emotional wellness.
Before I explain, I ask you: Would you like to become happier, more inspired and more motivated? Would you like to rid yourself of old haunting thought habits which sneak up on you and lock you into a chokehold of negativity – just when you least need them to? Would you like to kick depression’s ass and sweep the cobwebs from your mind – perhaps the long forbidden corners? How about eliminating the emotional attachments to the skeletons in your closet?
I’ve got you covered, baby.
Continue reading, for I will be explaining how essential oils are an effective component in a better inner and outer life.
And, that’s not all. I’ll be explaining how they can be used to achieve a better attitude, a brighter mindset and even enhance your creativity and work performance. Essential Oils have improved my life, and I’d like to bear witness to them improving your life as well.
Are you ready? Fasten your seatbelt.
But, first: Have an open mind. Do not be quick to disregard this information as being too “out there” or weird. If it feels weird, it’s only because it’s unfamiliar to you – because it’s outside of the scope of your “normal.”
Emotional Benefits of Essential Oils: Answers to Your Burning Questions
Q: How do essential oils having anything to do with my emotions or mental health?
A: Absolutely everything, for two reasons:
1) Simply by way of your emotions’ very own gatekeeper: The Amygdala, and
2) Cellular memories.
The amygdala, often referred to as the “seat of the emotions,” acts as a gatekeeper by which all sensory data you have and ever will encounter in your entire life is processed. The amygdala “handles” such information, determining if the information needs to be sent elsewhere (to other functions of the brain, the adrenal glands, the stomach, etc.) for continued processing. Therefore, every traumatic or emotionally impactful situation you encounter is both managed and recorded by the amygdala.
And, guess what?
Your sense of smell is the one and only sensory mechanism that is able to access the amygdala. Your senses are the literal spiritual heartbeat of you. Your senses are both a receptor and a communicator; they are essentially stepping up to the mic and proclaiming, “This is what your heart desire would like!” However, the amygdala is undaunted by sight, taste or touch. But your sense of smell – to it, such legendary gatekeeper is instantly responsive.
Thus, the red carpet must be rolled out for the use of essential oils, which then build an instant and sturdy bridge straight to the lovely amygdala, thereby accessing and “awakening” such stored traumas so that they can be released permanently. This does not mean essential oils will access a delete button, thereby eliminating such disturbing memories. Rather, the essential oils sweep through and discard the emotional baggage attached to such memories (which is the only thing ever weighing you down, anyway).
Essential Oils + Amygdala = Better Emotional and Mental Health
Cellular Memories: We store our traumas – big and small – in our bodies. This simple fact offers some level of explanation for the root of many ailments – from chronically stiff necks to painful jaws to sexual issues – just to name a few.
When a traumatic experience is recorded by the amygdala, it is then often stored in the corresponding area of the body.
The good news: The molecules of essential oils are tiny; small enough to carry nutrients to the cells as well as eject toxins from them – including toxic memories. However, different essential oils have different areas of talent and expertise. Some gravitate primarily to the musculoskeletal system, some to the digestive system, some to the nervous system, etc.
Young Living has done meticulous research to determine the best oils to access the emotions and cellular memories – and to heal them.
Q: Is there a risk in using essential oils? How do I know if I’m using the right oils for me?
A: Based upon my extensive research and discussions with my doctor, I do not see evidence of any risk to your health whatsoever, for the body will discard what it does not need. However, there may be periods of ‘trial and error.’ Also, more is not better, for these potent gifts from nature ask that you use them sparingly. For example, one drop of Young Living Peppermint Essential is equivalent to 28 cups of brewed peppermint tea.
Regardless, do your own research and stay within your own comfort zone. You are responsible for your own body, so listen to what it is telling you.
Also, it is important to note that the oils may initially “stir up” the emotional memory before releasing it. I have experienced this, but it is no cause for concern.
Q: So, What Are Your Favorites Oils for Better Emotional and Mental Health?
A: Continue reading, for I am eager to enlighten you…
Joy Essential Oil Blend
Sadness dissolves in the presence of Joy. I’ve witnessed it again and again. This feminine and floral oil blend uplifts the heart instantaneously. I enjoy diffusing it, for it fills my home and workspace with a cradling kind of harmony. It is one of the best oils to turn to when you or someone you care about is battling depression or acute feelings of gloom. Most delightfully, it inspires feelings of passion and romance.
Transformation Essential Oil Blend
All of life is about progression – some subtle, and some groundbreaking. Sometimes you need to transform a window, and sometimes you need to take a bulldozer straight through your lot. Regardless, this oil is incredibly helpful… and useful for when one feels “stuck,” bored, restless and/or unfulfilled.
This oil smells delicious. The first time I opened the bottle and took in a whiff, I felt as though every shred of self-belief within me was granted wings and, thus, prepared to take flight. I felt happy.
If you have moved beyond the heaviness of deep depression, anger, grief, etc. and are ready to call upon the winds of transformation to carry you to greater heights, this oil is the ideal partner.
Frankincense Essential Oil
In my experience, Frankincense is like a side door secret entrance leading directly to my spirit. A mere whiff of it causes the truest part of me to respond with a gentle yet affirmative, “Ahh, thank you for that. It’s nice to smell you again.”
Stress Away Essential Oil Blend
This blend smells like a divinely edible lime vanilla pound cake. It is an energizing and playful anxiety medicine as opposed to a fog-inducing one. I recommend diffusing it, applying it to your neck and wrists as a delicious perfume.
Warning: Prepare for strangers to bury their noses into your skin. Forgive them; they can’t help themselves.
Valor Essential Oil Blend
This oil does incredible things for emotions, but also offers physical benefits as well. It smells delicious blended with grapefruit in the morning when you’re in need of courageous energy to slay the day, but is also ideal with lavender at night for being whisked into a tension-free state of dreaming. This oil is overall balancing and flexible, and is a staple in my home.
My Essential Oil ‘Happy Potion’
Grapefruit Essential Oil + Citrus Fresh + Peppermint Essential Oil in a liter of water = Instant internal sunshine!
Together, these three oils brighten my mood within minutes. I feel like an otherworldly entity has swept me out of my emotional pit and into a higher, more energized state of happiness. One glass is like the sun peeking from behind the clouds and shining down over me – emotionally, anyway.
Grapefruit and the other citrus oils enhances my creativity and playful side, while peppermint enhances my mental clarity.
I begin every morning with this “potion.” Not long ago, one of my girlfriends stopped by my house for coffee on her way to work. Instead, I blessed her with my morning secret.
She entered my house in a sticky funk, but left it feeling light – departing with a trail of “thank you, thank you, thank you.” She was amazed at how it seemed to instantaneously sever her chains of heaviness – leaving them in a pile on the ground.
If you wish to take this with you on-the-go, you’ll need this water bottle.
**Please note: Every person’s biochemistry is unique. Your body may respond to essential oils differently than mine. You may respond to lemon or tangerine in a similar way that I respond to grapefruit. Please experiment and, as always, I encourage you to do your own research.
Q: So, how do I use these essential oils anyway?
A: Below are a few tried-and-true methods. I have used them all, with utmost effectiveness:
- Simply smelling straight from the bottle and/or diffusing, which directly accesses the lovely amygdala.
- Apply to the Vitaflex points on the bottoms of feet.
- Apply directly over targeted organs, over the wrists, on the temples and/or along the back of the neck.
- Ingesting in small quantities (by adding to water or placed into capsules).
Note: Many Young Living oils are safe to ingest, but not all. PLEASE make sure to read every label.
