Disclaimer: I am not an advocate for abusing one’s skin in the sun! I am simply sharing this information for those of you who are currently in pain and in dire need of a remedy! I have been in such a scenario, so allow me to come to your rescue!
I discovered this method while browsing online about four years ago. It was early summer, and I had fallen asleep at the pool. Aloe vera (including the fresh plant) had never worked for me at all, and I knew there must be something I could do. Lo and behold, I discovered the beloved BLACK TEA METHOD.
Since my initial discovery, I have used this method to nurse a terrible sunburn from a day in the scorching hot Belizian sun, as well as heal my husband’s sunburn while honeymooning in Sint Martin. I promise you this is not a gimmick. It truly works. Not only will it remove the heat from the burn, but it will also remove the redness, speed the healing process, prevent peeling and leave your skin with a beautiful toasty brown color. I had the worst sunburn of my entire life in Belize three years ago, and I did not peel whatsoever. If you had seen me on my first day with the burn, you would have thought it would take a couple of weeks to heal and that I would have gone through several stages of peeling. Not only did I never peel, I was completely healed and sunburn-free within two days. Yes, two days. Forty-eight hours.
Warning: Be sure to clean your nails thoroughly after each treatment, otherwise the tea is guaranteed to stain them. It may also temporarily stain your bathtub/shower (unless you have ceramic tile), so keep this in mind.
The more severe the burn, the more aggressively proactive approach you will need to take in regards to treating it. If you have a bad burn, you will need to purchase at least two boxes of black tea. The tannic acid in the tea is responsible for healing the burn, so make sure you purchase a pure, high-quality tea.
FOR ONE TREATMENT:
3-5 Black tea bags (the higher quality the better)
8 oz very hot (but not boiling) water
5-6 ice cubes OR 8 oz cold water
A small pitcher
Brew the tea bags in the hot (almost boiling, but not quite) water for a full 5 minutes. Once brewed, combine the tea with ice cubes or cold water in a pitcher. Stand in your shower and gently (and slowly) pour the tea onto the burned areas. Once you have used all of the tea, gently press the bags onto the individual areas which need the most attention/healing. Do not wipe the tea off. Allow the tea to completely absorb into your skin (up to 10 minutes) prior to dressing. Do not shower for at least two hours, or until you are ready for another treatment.
I typically treat my skin every two waking hours when I have a moderate-to-severe sunburn. You will be amazed at how much better you will feel in just 24 hours, but if may take two full days of treating it aggressively. Even if your burn is only slight, I still recommend doing this a couple of times because it will prevent peeling.
