I am not an expert on eyebrows or any topic for that matter, but merely former makeup artist and a writer with a tenacious spirit for research and observation. My purpose for writing this article is to simply share ideas, products and concepts I am familiar with and feel will benefit my readers. You may not agree with some of my ideas or suggestions, and I am not interested in a debate. As always, I encourage you to do your own research. My sole purpose of this site is not to convince you or anyone that I possess all of the answers, but to encourage a culture of you seeking answers and information for yourself. I hope you find these suggestions and tips helpful!
Eyebrows are a big deal. Gone are the days of over-plucked, thin eyebrows which created a generation of grandmothers desperate to pencil them back onto their faces. Determining your optimal eyebrow shape, shade and fullness has the potential to dramatically enhance your face, so let’s take a deep breath and step away from our tweezers for a moment. Also, no sharpies allowed.
Considering their importance in the overall balance and symmetry of the face, I recommend experimenting to determine the best shape for you. I have included some general information I hope you will find helpful, however it is important to consider that eyebrow shaping should not be a one-size-fits-all approach. Your best friend’s eye and face shape may compliment fuller, less-arched brows than your face and eye shape will. Your brows should create a spotlight for your best features. They should not be the main attraction, but more like the pair of heels which make your legs look amazing. I consider brows to be like the cherry on top of a sundae.
Get Your Growth On
Castor oil is stocked in my home at all times. If you are unaware of the multitude of benefits which castor oil offers, google it. From muscle aches to congested skin, it offers a vast array of remedies. I consider it to be one of the most understated beauty and wellness elixirs. Truly, it encourages the growth of both eyelashes and eyebrows. It is dense and has a somewhat unpleasant texture which is not optimal for spreading, however it is effective. Less is more. Begin treating your brows with castor oil each night, and within a matter of months, the increase in growth will be undeniable.
If you have sparse patches from past offenses of over-plucking, this product is a lifesaver. It will get your eyebrows growing right in record time. This is the product to use when you need more than a small amount of brow growth, as well as when you lack the patience for castor oil to take effect. You may also alternate use of this with castor oil.
I learned of this product from a lady who regularly frequented the majority of local makeup artist events I worked. The first few times I met her, she had eyebrows which made her face look sad. They were unevenly shaped with noticeable sparse areas. After having not seen her for a few months, upon merely saying hello, I immediately noticed that something transformative had taken place on her face. Her entire face appeared to be smiling and to have better overall symmetry. I quickly learned that, from two months of faithful use of this product alone, she had regrown and restored fullness to at least fifty percent of the sparse areas. The improvement was astounding.
Step Up Your Brow Game
To Pluck, To Wax Or To Thread?
I do not pay to have my eyebrows serviced professionally, for I need only to pluck a few stray hairs on occasion to maintain the shape I prefer. However, considering that, until recently, I was a makeup artist for seven years, I have doctored and performed dramatic overhauls on countless unfortunate eyebrow jobs. If you have unruly or misshapen brows, I recommend having them threaded versus having them waxed. I have witnessed far worse eyebrow waxing results than I have threading results. However, I realize there are exceptions. I have seen great wax jobs on occasion. I recommend finding an eyebrow practitioner who possesses the precision and attentiveness of a surgeon, and it shall be worth every dollar spent.
Fill Em’ In!
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade
Anastasia Beverly Hills knows eyebrows. In fact, their products trump the majority of the options available. I am not a fan of pencils or waxes, for I much prefer gel and mousse textures for filling in the eyebrows. This product is exceptional at sculpting and filling in sparse areas, adhering to each hair strand without looking too thick or artificial. It is truly waterproof and sweatproof. Feel free to challenge this claim by dancing in the rain or sweating on the treadmill for two hours. I guarantee your eyebrow game will remain intact. Also, the shade range is superior.
Tip: Be sure to seal the product tightly after each use. If you allow the product to sit without its top for more than an hour or so, it may dry to a cement-like texture. However, if you keep it sealed, it will remain creamy for many months of use.
Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse
I love this product because it is easy to apply and manipulate, however it dries to a waterproof, smudge-proof finish. It is the product I gravitate to the most often. The texture is creamy, the finish is soft and the color selection is great. None of the shades turn orange or ashy.
MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set
I use this product every day of my life! It acts as “hairspray” and a sealant for my brows, even on days I opt not to fill them in. It is the only brow gel you will ever need to buy. I have tried more popular and expensive options, but always return to this. My brows can be a bit unruly, but use of this product tames them beautifully. It attaches to the hair strand without looking shiny or heavy.
Milani Brow Fix
This product is truly exceptional, especially considering the price. It offers two shades for contouring and filling in, as well as a highlight for the brow bone. It is by far the best option for eyebrows in terms of a drugstore price point. In fact, it trumps the majority of high-end eyebrow products. It blends naturally and seamlessly, and is a breeze to apply. The powders are not nearly as transfer-resistant nor waterproof as the previously recommended products are, however. Therefore, if that is a concern for you, this may not be your best option. This product also comes with a nice pair of travel tweezers (however, remember: you are forbidden to over-pluck!)
Tip: When you are drawing your brows, do not draw a straight line. Using a staccato type of movement, draw short curved shapes that resemble the look of actual eyebrow hairs.
Too Much Brow Drama For Me, Mama
I much prefer full, healthy brows to thin, weak brows. Dramatic brows are gorgeous when done appropriately. However, your brows should compliment your eye shape; not overpower them. It is entirely possible to create a striking, dramatic effect without it appearing too obvious and overdone. On a recent morning coffee venture, I noticed a stunningly beautiful girl whose brows nearly provoked me to cry in a corner. I found myself trailing behind her, contemplating if I should tap her on her shoulder and make myself her personal eyebrow fairy.
She was a fair blonde with somewhat small eyes. She had painted her eyebrows on so heavily, using a dark brown pencil, and the result was obvious and too overpowering for her face. Her brows appeared to be an art experiment gone awry, even resembling caterpillars, therefore her eyes somewhat disappeared. It was like pairing a beautiful, elegant gown with tacky, cheaply made sneakers. Had she opted for a shade or two lighter and not drawn them on quite so heavily, her eyes would have been one of the main attractions on her face. I had to study her face for a moment to take notice of how pretty her eyes truly were. However, when I allowed myself to study them, I noticed they were a gorgeous almond shape as well as a unique golden-honey brown shade I had rarely, if ever, seen. With the right brow fullness and shape, her eyes would have been much more captivating and would have likely appeared larger as well.
NOTE: Consider Your Health When Examining Your Eyebrows
If your eyebrows have become thin, sparse and uneven over time, it may be a symptom of a thyroid or other health issue. Your face reveals a great deal of what you need to know about what is going on inside of you. Don’t ignore it!
