Pumpkin is fall’s most prized possession, claim-to-fame and ultimate romancer. Every year, before a cool breeze has an opportunity to blow through, exuberant devotees are venturing to their local coffee shops for the beloved latte made in its honor.
We pine for its arrival. And, when evidence of its harvest fills our stores, we adore the scent of it, indulge in the flavor of it and marvel at the sight of it. We cover our kitchen floors with newspaper, inviting our creativity to enable messy ventures with seeds and slimy guts. We add dollops of it to our oatmeal and favorite baking recipes. We make candles of it and don our centerpieces with it. Truly, it’s a revolution every year.
But we often forget the powerhouse of health and vanity-related benefits. So, I am offering up a list of my favorite beauty, home and wellness products, as well as tasteful bites and concoctions, all plucked and spotlighted for the love of pumpkin. There are offerings of splash, slather, smell and devour.
Step into the celebration, reader…
For the Body
Haus of Gloi Pumpkin Queen Pumpkin Butter
If you haven’t tried Haus of Gloi pumpkin butters and perfumed oils, you must go here as soon as possible. This brand is vegan-friendly, reasonably priced and of supreme quality. I have yet to purchase a disappointing product. The pumpkin butters contain actual pumpkin seed oil, which is incredibly nourishing to the skin. Most notably, I am able to apply the butter directly to my skin immediately after shaving without the risk of painful burning or stinging.
The fragrance of the Pumpkin Queen butter gives me the feeling of being wrapped in my warmest, coziest safe haven of blankets on the most frightening, ghoul-infested night. It is as though the spirit of fall has been captured in a jar. Do not expect it to smell the way your favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte tastes, however. It is far more interesting.
The scent is incredibly comforting, explosively delicious and undeniably pumpkin, yet understatedly sexy. Perhaps its hint of amber is responsible for the subtle splash of sexiness. There is a whisper of musk as well.
LUSH Pumpkin Bath-o’-lantern
LUSH stores often give me the same feeling I had when I visited the Hello Kitty store as a child. Their gorgeous assortment of products gives me the most euphoric kind of panic attack, and their bubble bars and bombs make bath time more colorful, fluffy, frothy and fragrantly yummy. This particular bath bomb excels in every category, and I’m happy for its exception of “glittery” and overload of synthetic ingredients (click to read this article for why I’m now afraid of the bath glitter. FYI: I feel this bath bomb, while not free of synthetic ingredients and not something I would drop into my bath every day, is safer than most, therefore I feel comfortable listing it. )
This bomb of playfulness turns the bath water a vivid orange, and smells like cinnamon-y pumpkin pie. It is like a hug from autumn in a bath.
Shea Terra Organics Shea Butter & Malawi Sugar 2-in-1 Gingered Pumpkin Body Scrub
Shea Terra Organics never disappoints with their unwavering integrity and quality, and this product wins the award for my greatest number of repurchases. It is smoothing, refining and moisturizing. It is just as much a body scrub as it is a moisturizer. If you are especially dry, you may need an additional lotion or body butter following your bath or shower. However, if your skin is no more than moderately dry, this product alone will be sufficient.
Its scent reminds me of this unforgettable pumpkin tart I once devoured from a local coffee shop in Saint Louis. It is equal parts pumpkin, spice, cream and candy, though never offensive nor overly fragrant. The scent lingers delicately on the skin for hours following bath time.
For the Face
Mychelle Incredible Pumpkin Peel
This is my favorite product to use when I need my skin to look better within a matter of hours, but without the risk of irritation. It is an ideal and gentler alternative to an acid peel.
This peel contains pumpkin enzymes which gently decongest while dramatically smoothing the texture of facial skin. Results can be seen and felt after a single use. I typically experience mild redness for approximately five minutes after rinsing the product from my face, but never any irritation beyond that time period.
And it smells divine.
Mychelle Pumpkin Renew Cream
This product is a staple of mine year-round. It can always be found on my bathroom counter. It smells mildly of pumpkin, and spreads like velvet across the skin. It is neither oily nor especially emollient, providing the perfect balance of moisture and absorbing into the skin effortlessly. I find its enzymes and gentle acids helpful at keeping breakouts at bay.
Alana Mitchell Foaming Pumpkin Cleanser
This product is an absolute hidden jewel. Made from real pumpkin, it is rich in lactic acid and provides a shocking level of exfoliation and rejuvenation to the skin – all during a simple cleanse. It removes every trace of makeup and gunk, and reveals a skin as smooth as glass. And it smells so deliciously edible, I have to force myself to not lick it from my fingers.
Sage Goddess Pumpkin Pie Gem-Infused Exfoliant Scrub
I could never, in even my most fortunate moments of being guided by inspiration, craft a sentence half as pretty as the scent of this product is “wow” inducing. The first time I washed my face with it, I stood wide-eyed and speechless in front of my bathroom mirror for almost a minute before finally demanding of my own reflection, “What is in this freaking stuff?”
Although it is sold as being suitable for the face and body, I prefer its gentle texture solely for my face. You will never obtain such an organically rosy glow elsewhere, and the texture of your cheeks will be as smooth as glass. There is also a lovely surprise in the center of the jar.
For the Burn…
Pumpkin Pie Soy Candle by Pure Integrity Candles (Non-Toxic!)
If your fall and winter seasons are incomplete unless you burn pumpkin-scented candles every day, as I do, this recommendation is guaranteed to improve your life. Even if you dismiss my every other recommendation, do not disregard this one. This candle smells like the most decadent, creamy, mouth-watering and legendary slice of pumpkin pie imaginable. In fact, your nose will try and convince you that it is, in fact, pumpkin pie.
I’m not sure you understand. You see, this is so incredibly indulgent to my sense of smell, my tastebuds often stand at attention and beckon for a sinful slice. I’m not sure how the makers of this candle achieved such, but the fragrant notes absolutely greet the nose in delicate waves. First, there are the scents of creamy pumpkin and cinnamon. Secondly, nutmeg makes an entrance. Finally, the entire pie is complete when greeted by the scent of buttery, flakey crust. Please just trust me on this one. I will be awaiting your letters of love and gratitude.
Pumpkin Pie Incense by IntenseIncense
You know how there are an abundance of incense varieties on the market and it’s easy to get excited at the store when you see one you are certain will become your favorite of all time, but then you burn it and it smells absolutely nothing like you were hoping it would? I’ve experienced such disappointment nearly a hundred times.
Purchase of this product will cause no such scenario, however. It smells like smoked pumpkin pie or, perhaps, somewhat like sitting next to someone eating pumpkin pie at a bonfire. It epitomizes fall, and it never disappoints. If you love the smell of pumpkin pie, buy this. If you do not, just continue burning your nag champa.
For the Tastebuds…
Maxine’s Pumpkin Pecan Spice Heavenly Cookes (Gluten-Free, Vegan & Delicious!)
Made from oat flour, sweetened with low-glycemic coconut sugar and containing no artificial or refined anything, I never feel guilty about indulging in these. They are not just sweet treats, but actual food. And the “heavenly” description is fitting. They are best when paired with a warm cup of coffee.
The Best Ever Homemade Pumpkin Pie Coffee Creamer
Each of my most faithful readers are already aware of my sincere love for coffee. I’ve even written a love letter to it. The recipe above is a merging of two of my senses’ greatest loves. I recommend blending all ingredients into a Blendtec (which I own and faithfully use) or a Vitamix (which I have used, but do not currently own).
Be sure to blend well until the creamer is warm, and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It typically remains fresh for about five days.
